The Eclipse Countdown App Is Now Available on the App Store and Google Play

We’re excited to announce the official launch of Eclipse Countdown app, now available on both the App Store and Google Play.

This app was born from a simple observation: witnessing a total solar eclipse is one of the most powerful experiences in nature, yet it unfolds in just a few intense, fast-moving minutes. You prepare days even years and then, suddenly, everything happens at once.

And in that moment, excitement takes over.

Why we build it

Even the most experienced observers know this feeling well. The sky changes, the light drops, the temperature shifts, and your attention is pulled in every direction. It’s surprisingly easy to forget to look for specific transient phenomena, or to miss events that last only a few seconds. Many people realize afterward that they never saw the planets around  the sun, or did not try to observe the shadow bands. Those working with instruments face an additional challenge: under pressure, it’s easy to skip steps in carefully planned procedures—forgetting to remove a solar filter at the right moment, delaying an exposure adjustment, or losing track of timing while managing equipment.

Eclipse Countdown was designed precisely for this reality

How It Works During the Eclipse

At its core, the app acts as a reliable companion during the eclipse, guiding you through each phase with precise, real-time voice cues. Instead of constantly checking a screen or a printed schedule, you can keep your eyes on the sky—or on your equipment—while the app announces exactly what is happening and what is about to happen. It helps you stay present in the experience, while still executing everything you planned. And if you are forced to really chase the eclipse through the clouds and you have to change location on foot or by car, the app automatically adjusts all the calculation for you.

Who is it for

The app adapts naturally to different types of users. If this is your first eclipse, it provides a structured and reassuring guide, helping you understand what is happening at each stage and when to observe key phenomena. If you are an astrophotographer, it becomes a practical tool to support your workflow, allowing you to synchronize actions with sub-second precision without breaking concentration. For eclipse chasers, it supports both planning and real-time decision-making, offering accurate timing based on your exact location and tools to explore the path of totality. And for advanced users and researchers, it delivers the level of accuracy required for rigorous observation, thanks to high-fidelity computational models and detailed corrections.

Beyond the live experience, Eclipse Countdown is also a preparation tool. You can simulate the entire sequence of the eclipse in advance, test voice announcements, and rehearse your observation or photography workflow. This makes it easier to anticipate critical moments and reduce uncertainty when the real event begins. An integrated guide also helps you understand what to look for—from subtle atmospheric effects to well-known phenomena—and how to observe safely.

Built on Scientific Accuracy

What sets the app apart is its scientific foundation. Built on advanced 3D computational models developed by the Besselian Elements Team, it incorporates precise positional calculations and lunar limb corrections to deliver highly accurate timing tailored to your exact location. In a context where seconds truly matter, that level of precision makes a difference, especially if you are planning to observe the eclipse near the edge of the path of totality.

A total solar eclipse is not just something you watch—it’s something you experience, often only a handful of times in a lifetime. Eclipse Countdown is designed to help you experience it fully, without missing the moments that make it unforgettable.

A big thank you to the beta testers who helped to adapt and fine tune the User Interface, the functionalities, the translations with their precious feedbacks.
